Megumi Shimizu of Shiki

5. Shiki

The story takes place in a small, quiet village in Japan, Kotoba. The mysterious Kirishiki family moves into a mansion within the village, and coincidentally, a string of unexplainable deaths began to spread.

Doctor Toshio Ozaki, director of the only hospital in Sotoba, begins to investigate and thought of it as an epidemic at first. As the series progresses and more deaths occur, he learns that the deaths were caused by vampires called Shiki.

The series explores the boundary that separates man from vampire. It’s a must-watch for anyone even remotely interested in horror.

The one soundtrack that plays throughout the show is a little girl singing, "Lalalaaaaa, lalalaaaaa" while a piano note plays in the background is just – creepy.

saya of Blood: The Last Vampire

4. Blood: The Last Vampire

The anime is set in the U.S. army base located in post World War II Japan on the year of 1966, a Halloween, just a few months before the War of Vietnam.

Its main character of this show is a girl in sailor-fuku named Saya. Saya is a mysterious, quiet girl who aids the vampire hunters in killing these shape-shifting, blood-sucking monsters called, Chiropterans using her Katana (sword).

There is plenty of sword action in this film showcasing Saya’s extraordinary abilities to save the humans from these Chiropterans. If you don’t mind blood and gore – it’s a visual feast. This is more serious and a lot darker than other Blood franchise.

vampire princess miyu and larva

3. Vampire Princess Miyu (Kyuuketsuki Miyu)

A normal high school girl by day, a Shinma hunter at night. Miyu was born as the vampire princess appointed to hunt down and banish the evil Shinma (shape shifting god demons) that preys on humans back into the Darkness. In her missions, she is accompanied by a masked Shinma whom she has enslaved named, Larva.

An anime classic. It centers on human and shinma relationships and their tragic stories at an attempt to live in the human world.

2. Vampire Hunter D: BloodLust

D is a dunpeal, a half-breed child of the legendary Vampire lord and a human mother, therefore making him a strong vampire hunter. Being a dunpeal, he was an outcast but his hunting prowess made him a renowned bounty hunter gaining the acceptance of humans.

He and the Markus brothers are hired to bring back Charlotte Elbourne, the daughter of a wealthy family who has been kidnapped by a vampire, Meier Link.

A personal vampire anime favorite of mine, this film has aged quite gracefully. It’s beautiful, gory and gothic. Some scenes will leave you in awe.

alucard of hellsing

1. Hellsing

Hellsing is an organization that specializes in battling unearthly creatures of the night in the effort to keep humans safe. The organization is led by Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing who has to rely on the powerful vampire Alucard and his newly sired ward Seras Victoria to protect the British Empire from undead ghouls and satanic creatures.

The opening theme is very cool, with hip, jazzy sounds that fit nicely with the atmosphere of the show. The story line is thrilling that will keep you engaged and guessing. There are also some really cool twists in the series that’s worth checking out.
